A companion to the 2007 volume The Light of the Soul, which features Ulrich Putsch's massive German translation of the Lumen anime C, this book presents the texts of three shorter Latin works that are commonly attributed to Ulrich, a Swabian whose long and distinguished career in the Tyrol culminated in his appointment as Bishop of Brixen (Bressanone) in 1427. His Diarium is a lively, highly subjective and often lapidary account of his ten-year episcopate, and as such a fascinating example of late medieval autobiography. Ulrich's Oraciones super missam, meanwhile, are a set of prayers designed for devotional use by congregants attending Mass, which will be of considerable interest to students of lay religious culture. Finally, his Manuale simplicium sacerdotum, a handbook for secular priests that is based on Durandus's Racionale divinorum officiorum, constitutes a valuable potential resource for historians of the late medieval church. The volume also contains a German translation of the Oraciones that may very well have been completed by Ulrich himself, and an introduction that charts his varied career and discusses the contents, themes, manuscripts, and textual history of the works edited. -- Page 4 of cover.

This volume is the first of two containing hagiographical narratives from medieval Central Europe. The lives of the saints in this volume, from the tenth to eleventh centuries, written not much later, are telling witnesses for the process of Christianization of Bohemia, Poland, Hungary and Dalmatia. Most of them became patrons of their region and highly venerated throughout the Middle Ages. The volume presents the first English translation of a legend of each of these saints with the most recent critical edition of the Latin original and prefaces discussing the textual tradition. In an appendix the extensive hagiographical literature of the saints is being critically surveyed.

The solitary life of the recluse or enclosed anchorite was one of the most extreme, and remains one of the most fascinating, forms of religious life of the Middle Ages. Leaving the world behind, anchorites submitted themselves to a life of perpetual enclosure, locked - or even walled - into a small cell, usually attached to a church. They were enclosed to the accompaniment of the Office of the Dead, and they expected to die and be buried in their cells. Why did people choose to become anchorites? What did they do all day? What rewards did they hope for, in return for the sacrifice they had made? These are the questions addressed and answered in the 'Speculum Inclusorum', a 'rule' for male anchorites dating from the early years of the fifteenth century, and its English translation, designed for an audience of women anchorites, 'A mirror for recluses.' This edition prints the Latin 'Speculum Inclusorum' in parallel with the 'English mirror', and supplies a modern English translation for those parts of the 'Speculum' that are - whether by accident or design - absent from the Middle English. It offers the first edition of the Latin since the 1930s, and the only available translation of the entire text. -- Publisher's description.

Hrotsvit, a canoness in the German convent Gandersheim, wrote Latin poems, stories, plays, and histories during the reign of Emperor Otto the Great (962-973). She expresses a strong sense of authorial mission in letters, prefaces, and dedications. These personal writings, as well as her full literary corpus, are studied in twelve original essays by scholars from Europe and North America, who bring several perspectives to bear. Her historical roots are shown, both in her use of Christian literary tradition (e.g., the legend) and in her understanding of political forces shaping her time. Her strong spirituality emerges from vivid portraits not only of martyrs but also of men and women who question and doubt the Lord, while her openness to problems of sexuality, and of the need for women to realize their individuality and particular gifts, is surprisingly modern. Contributors include: Walter Berscin, Katrinette Bodarwé, Jay Lees, Gary Macy, Linda McMillin, Florence Newman, and Lisa Weston
